Coastal Walks Around Abersoch: Top 3
Any seasoned traveller knows that you see so much more of an area when you have a good walk around! While we wouldn’t recommend walking literally everywhere - the Llanbedrog-Abersoch areas definitely have their fair share of hills - we do have some all-time favourites to share.
Whether you’re with the kids, with the dog, out for a romantic stroll, or just out for wander, we reckon you’ll want to give these coastal walks a try!
Take in panoramic views of Llanbedrog beach and beyond when you visit the Tin Man.
1. The Tin Man
Walk time: approx. 2 hours.
The Tin Man, or Iron Man, loop is a local favourite, and the best bit is you can do this walk from the front door of Tawelfor Beach Cottage. There is a specific way round I’d recommend:
Starting at the Llanbedrog Beach Bar for any last-minute loo breaks and refreshments, follow the beach into the cliff and you will find the old stone steps. Though your thighs will burn on the ascent, it is much easier to walk up than down. Believe me, I’ve tried both. Plus, you get the only hard bit out the way as soon as possible, so you can enjoy the rest!
From the cliff steps you emerge victorious and are thoroughly rewarded with one of the most spectacular views you will come across. On a clear day you may even be able to spot the mighty Mount Snowdon across the bay. But why stop there? Carry on around the headland and take in more stunning views of The Warren beach, Abersoch harbour and Abersoch main beach.
To complete the loop, you can either stay following the headland which will gradually bring you back down to Llanbedrog via peaceful country lanes. Alternatively, scale a steep downward path from which you can join the back lanes slightly further round, making a bigger loop. There’s plenty of signposts en route, so you’ll always find your way back to Llanbedrog.
Don’t forget to grab an ice-cream in Llanbedrog when you’re finished! You deserve it.
Visit Abersoch harbour beach and see if you can spot a fishing boat offloading its latest catch!
2. Abersoch Beach
The seaside village of Abersoch is the local hot spot, with everything you need for a great day out. It’s highly popular during peak season, so if you’re planning to park, I’d say get there before 11am.
Abersoch has a few car parks to choose from; main-road parking next to Fach Farm Caravan Park, a new-for-2018 pay and display just after that (before you reach Abersoch' Land and Sea). You can park at the harbour itself, for free. You can also choose Abersoch main beach car par (pay and display).
This recommendation isn’t a loop as such, but more of a ‘park and explore’. Wander Abersoch high street for a wide choice of food, drink, ice cream, and cute local shops full of souvenirs and the essential items - including buckets, spades and crabbing nets! If you’ve forgotten your swimsuit, want to buy a new wetsuit or even book a surf lesson, you’re also in luck; head over to West Coast Surf towards the harbour end of the main street.
And then there’s the beaches. At low tide, you can walk onto harbour beach and just about get round the rocks to the main beach (not recommended with a pram). How do you know you’re on the main beach? The beach huts, of course! A sea of colour on the sand, they’re hard to miss. Walk down the mile-long stretch and treat yourself to a hot chocolate at The Little Tea Rooms, before heading back into Abersoch via the golf course path, which runs parallel to the beach.
Wander along this beautiful stretch of the All Wales Coastal Footpath when you try the Cim Farm Circular Path.
3. Cim Farm Circular Path
Walk time: approx. 1 hour.
A further 10 minutes’ drive from Abersoch and you’ll find Pant Car Park. (Pant meaning valley, in Welsh.)
This is another fantastic coastal route offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding bays and St. Tudwal’s Islands. Unlike the Tin Man route, it’s pretty flat so perhaps more favourable if you’re wanting a more relaxed stroll.
The All Wales Coastal Footpath makes up two-thirds of this lovely loop. If you set off in the direction of Porth Ceiriad (anti-clockwise), you’ll follow this path all the way around the headland, around the border of Cim Farm. You can also make the loop larger by adding Abersoch beach as a stop-off point. The final third of the walk is then a mix of country road and existing footpaths.
Please note that Cim Farm holds a myriad of livestock, so remember to keep dogs on a lead and stick to the assigned paths.
